FAQ

  • Are startups for me?

If you’re curious, proactive and happy to figure things out as you go - probably, yes.

You don’t need loads of experience. But you do need energy, initiative, and a REAL interest in the company you’re joining. The best early hires show up with ideas, ask smart questions and actually care.

If that sounds like you, startups are one of the best places to grow.

  • Where can I find the roles listed on The Graduate Guide?

We list all of our roles in our Circle community on the Jobs Board page.

You may also see our roles being advertised on our LinkedIn from time to time.

  • When should I apply for a role?

It’s easier than ever to generate a CV or cover letter with AI.

But it’s just as easy for employers to spot - and reject - overly AI-generated applications.

So don’t just apply for the sake of it. Think carefully about whether you want that role, at that company. If not, you’ll probably find the process - or the job itself - frustrating or unrewarding.

  • What sort of support does The Graduate Guide offer?

We’re not your typical ‘recruitment’ company.

In fact, there’s no one quite like us.

Born from our own frustrations of figuring out careers at uni, we’re as candidate-first as it gets.

Whether you want to build your own startup through Grads Building Companies or join one through The Graduate Guide, we’ve got you.

Events, content, community. Yeah, they may sound like buzzwords - but we’ve spent the last two years making sure they’re not.

  • How should I think about the risk of a startup career?

Anything worthwhile comes with a bit of risk - and startups are no different. They move fast, evolve quickly, and yes, things can change a lot in a year. But that pace is also what makes them powerful.

You’ll get the kind of ownership, learning, and growth that would take years in a bigger company. You’ll help shape something real, and often join a team when it still feels like the early days – because it is.

That said, you’re not going in blind.

Every startup we work with is backed by funding, solving meaningful problems, and fully committed to supporting early talent. We speak directly to the founders, ask the tough questions, and only bring them into our ecosystem if we genuinely believe they’re a great place to grow.

  • What salary can I expect to be paid at a startup?

There’s no one answer. It depends on the role, the industry, and the company.

But on average? Startups hiring early-career professionals through us tend to offer between £30k–£40k, often with share options and fast progression.

If you have 3+ years of experience you can expect a higher salary. For example, there are sales and engineering roles that go up to £80k in the startup world.

  • Do startups sponsor work visas?

    Some do, some don’t.

We always make it clear if a startup hiring through us is open to sponsoring a visa.

  • How do I find out about the status of my application?

We use a tool called Vizzy - a CV alternative that gives you a better chance of standing out.

You can check your Vizzy portal for updates or keep an eye on your inbox - you’ll get an email once the employer has made a decision.
